Councillor Catherine Gibbons (Milton and Bournville)
Councillor Catherine Gibbons (Bournville)
Catherine is a North Somerset Councillor in Milton and a Weston Town Councillor representing residents in Bournville ward. Catherine is the Executive Member for Children’s Services and Lifelong Learning and the Group Leader of North Somerset Councillors.
In November 2017 Catherine brought a motion to Weston Town Council asking that it should take the lead in getting Weston accredited by Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) Plastic Free Coastline Campaign. This was carried unanimously, and Weston Town Council was the first council in the country to vote this motion through! Since then, Weston has completed all the requirements for the accreditation, and due to a Labour initiative Weston is now a Plastic Free Town as recognised by Surfers against Sewage.
This year, after considerable research, Catherine worked up a proposal that the town council should fund a night shelter for the homeless following a model used in other areas (e.g. the Bus Shelter, Ipswich) costing £25000 p.a.
This specific idea was not adopted per se but the council did vote for £25000 to be set aside to go towards funding overnight accommodation for the homeless. This means that we have achieved a step forward in the town council taking a more active role in social care and deprivation issues. The Night Assessment Centre is now open and providing support for up to ten guests every night.
