So our Conservative MP,John Penrose, has attempted to intervene with Weston Area Health Trust over the impending overnight closure of the A&E department at Weston General Hospital.
But, John Penrose has had months to "sort this out" He knew, as did Weston Labour, this was the preferred way forward for the Health Trust by January.
When Weston Labour found out about it we started campaigning on the High St, I and several others addressed a North Somerset Council Meeting on this subject in March. Weston Labour have held a public protest at the Town Hall when they debated the STP. Weston Labour have marched in Bristol and London. Weston Labour have met Colin Bradbury from the CCG, and he has given the Labour Party and the public separate presentations back in April. Our Weston Labour District Councillor Ian Parker sits on the local Healthwatch Panel and he has been informing us of the progress of the Sustainability and Transformation Plan that contains the overnight closure option for the A&E. Weston Labour have written letters to the local media, and I have been interviewed,, as Acting Chair of Weston Labour, on Radio Bristol about the cuts in the STP.
At worst John Penrose knew about this in Late April, when the General Election was called, because it was one of our main campaign issues, and at best he knew this was the most likely outcome from the STP at the end of 2016 when we did.
It was also raised, by Weston Labour, at the two Hustings John Penrose attended. He told us it would be put to a full public consultation before it happened...it wasn't despite Weston Area Health Trust saying there would be a 12 week public consultation.
....and yet he doesn't make any effort to meet Hospital Management about the A&E closure until after the General Election, and after the final decision has been made?
He either doesn't care, has deliberately not got involved because it would have damaged his Election campaign, has been told not to get involved by Conservative Central HQ,or he's ineffective as MP for Weston-super-Mare.
There will be public demonstartion by the Health Unions, Weston-super-Mare Constituency Labour Party, and other interested parties, at Weston General Hospital on July 4th from 9am against the closure plans. Please join us if you want to fight for our A&E.
